Course objectives: The course focuses on modelling and analyzing communication networks, network protocols and applications, using mathematical tools. It is designed for graduate students. By the end of the course students will be able to construct tractable models of complex networking problems and attack performance problems with analytical methods or simulation

Content:
 
1 Introduction • Background, Methods for Performance Evaluation, Queues in Computers and Computer Networks, Queuing Models.
2 Characterization of Data Traffic Introduction, Poisson Random Variable, The Pareto Random Variable, Markov Process, Simulation.
3. Queuing Theory Introduction, Derivation of Equilibrium State Probabilities, The M/ M/1 Queue, State Dependent Markovian Queues, The M/G/1 Queue, Discrete Time Queues, Queuing Networks, Self-Similar Traffic.
4 Multiaccess Communication Introduction, Slotted Multiacess and The Aloha System, Splitting Algorithms, Carrier Sensing.
5 TCP Performance Evaluation Introduction, TCP Congestion Control, TCP Flow Control, TCP Performance Evaluation.
6 Routing in Data Networks Introduction, Stability of Adaptive Shortest Path Routing Algorithms, Formulating Communication Networks Flow Problem, Optimal Routing.
